In the realm of battle, training was a gruelling challenge, the closest preparation for real combat. Though dreaded by many, the incentive ensured the safety of their families, their homes and all their land. The ultimate honour awaited those who endured - a steel war mask. The symbol of courage and determination.

While the mask was known to limit vision and make breathing more challenging, it offered an invaluable assurance of protection that made it worth the limitations.

Made from steel, embellished with intricate gold detail around the eyes, the brows and the moustache. It also included an Arabic inscription. The mask was an integral part of an ensemble including a helmet and an armoured jacket. It stood as a true emblem of a warrior's strength and dedication. Attributes which to this day are admired by so many.

The Steel War Mask is just one of many pieces on show at MIA that make up the largest collection of Islamic artefacts from across the world.
